My organisation is worried about staff who are in debt. What resources can you provide?
We are able to provide tailored staff seminars, please contact the office to discuss your requirements.
Our Moneymanuals are simple to understand, jargon-free, concise booklets aimed at helping people manage their money well. The main aim is to educate people so that they can avoid the pain of over-indebtedness. They also display the Consumer Credit Counselling Service's (CCCS) free, confidential helpline number for anyone who needs help now.
We have a Generic Moneymanual - Thinking about Money - to help people manage their money well and avoid the pain of too much debt. You may also find our Moneymanual for Dealing with Debt useful. This guide will take people through the process of working out how much is owed and who to, working out much they have got coming in and going out each month and how to negotiate with creditors.
You can order these from our publications page. There is scope to customise each Moneymanual with details of your Organisation etc. Other material can be downloaded free from the Resources page.
Visit our dedicated money education website www.moneybasics.co.uk for more practical help. It is divided into easy-to-use sections, designed to appeal to people of all ages and in different circumstances.
The site gives simple, clear, independent information about money including information on budgeting, banking, borrowing money, saving and life events, e.g. - what to consider if you're buying a car, starting a home or planning a family.
Do you know of any organisations that train debt advisers?
- The Money Advice Trust run courses for members of the major free independent debt advice organisations - Citizens Advice, Advice UK and the Institute of Money Advisors. They can be contacted on 020 7489 7791 or www.wiseradviser.org.
- Community Money Advice provide support for debt advice centres through their network. They can advise on all aspects of setting up a debt advice centre, training for advisors, access to low cost indemnity insurance, administration software and on going support. - Birmingham Settlement runs a range of courses which individuals can join. They can be contacted on 0121 248 3026 or www.birminghamsettlement.org.uk.
- Child Poverty Action Group who run a 2 day course on "Dealing with Debt" several times a year. They can be contacted on 020 7837 6414 or www.childpoverty.org.uk. They also have an excellent range of publications including a "Debt Advice Handbook" which is an essential manual for all debt advisers.
We have individuals who are interested in helping people in our community to stay out of debt and / or help those who are in debt. How can Credit Action help?
As a starting point, have a look at our 'Information for Organisations' and 'Information for Churches' webpages to give you some ideas on how you can help others. Credit Action are able to provide training to equip volunteers and have a range of publications to assist you. Do you have any resources to support Credit Unions?
We can help support the lending decision of Loans Officers so that they will be better equipped to probe appropriately and sensitively and be better able to assess and mitigate the risk of giving a loan.
Credit Action do this by delivering training to Credit Unions, or individual Loans Officers, in budget counselling and debt advice awareness. Credit Action can also provide practical resources (see above).
